      Out in the World

      Dataprovider.com in Colombia

We love getting out and collaborating with data-driven professionals internationally, and the last month has been particularly interesting.

Our Head of Insights, Veronika Vilgis, represented us in Medellín, Colombia a few weeks ago at an inspiring dual event. For the UN Datathon 2024, we were proud to contribute our data and mentorship, and saw brilliant teams turn our data into real-world solutions for sustainable tourism in urban contexts. Dr. Vilgis then joined the World Data Forum, which proved an incredible opportunity to meet data leaders, swap ideas, and envision our next big collaboration. We walked away inspired and ready to take data innovation even further. Learn more about our data contribution here.

Besides this, our sales executives have been across the globe in Dubai, Istanbul, and New York, at events for all kinds of data-driven industries. Keep up with our travels on LinkedIn or schedule a chat on our website.

        Data in the News

The data behind Mattel's Wicked debacle

Domains are the addresses of the internet, and just like wrong directions can get you lost, the wrong URL can take you or your clients where they don’t want to be.

In short: Mattel released new dolls promoting the Wicked musical film, and it became major online news that the website on the dolls’ packaging led to an adult content site instead of the movie’s homepage. Our Connection Index data showed that traffic to the adult website spiked over 2000% after the news broke on November 10th. This was problematic, prompting Mattel to remove the dolls from shelves while they worked on a solution. Fortunately, no discernible increase was visible when the dolls came out in September, implying that curious adults were the ones driving the numbers rather than children.

The festive side of the internet

In our monthly crawl of every domain on the web, we come across all kinds of things. Seasonal and themed websites are part of what makes the internet fun: it's a way people connect over oceans and time, coming together to enjoy special annual moments. This month, we'd love to share a few of our favorite festive links. Take a peek!

        • DIYChristmas — this forum is the hub of all things Christmas lights and automation. Those festive houses with decorations that change to music, move around, tell a story… well, the lights don't program themselves. Find the answer to any Christmas light question on this website, or just enjoy the enthusiasm.
        • A history of New York department stores at Christmas — there's something incredibly nostalgic about it, the idea of NYC department stores at Christmas—the window displays, the “contact sport” of gift-buying. This article from the Strategist dives into department store history with interviews and old photographs. It's funny and well worth the read.
        • National Geographic's 2024 In Pictures — a photographic journey through incredible moments in nature, science, and cultural heritage. The breakthroughs of 2024 are told as visual stories, with context and further reading. Be sure to check out NatGeo's other 2024 In Review lists, too.
